Labour deporting far more criminals than Boris Truss or Rishi
Despite potshots from commentators on line, the facts don’t lie: this Labour government has been the most robust in the last five years on deporting people who shouldn’t be in Britain, reversing a trend of increasingly lazy and liberal enforcement under the Conservatives.
The first six months of Labour government led to the highest deportation numbers for any six month period in the last five years – 16,400 in six months. In contrast, the Tories could only muster 14,623 for the whole of 2022, and 10,140 the year before – in other words, Labour is deporting criminals at more than twice the pace of Boris Johnson.

What gives? Rather than just talking about deportations, the Government has taken a more pragmatic approach, working with international partners such as Meloni’s Italy to crack down on people smugglers, and 15 million pounds in funding to deport arrivals to 11 home countries. It turns out that international problems require international solutions. But it’s not just deportations. The number of skilled worker visas is down compared to the last Conservative government, declining 57% across 2024. Overall immigration continues to decline from record peaks, thought it remains too high.
This is not an accident, or a gimmick – it’s a feature of Labour’s approach. Labour is not a liberal party, it’s a social democratic one – it’s plans to give a fair pay structure for doctors and teachers, increase domestic training for new NHS nurses and social care workers, and to make work pay, are all designed to retain as many British workers as possible so that businesses do not shop abroad for new arrivals.
The Conservative government proved themselves willing to give big businesses whatever immigration system they wanted – even if it was a million a year – so long as it kept workers’ wages down and kept profits high. Labour takes a different approach, and however the government might face criticism for not going far enough in one direction or the other, it’s rising outcomes are driven by a politics that places British workers above international corporations.
