The Woke Right Is Eating Itself
What we’re witnessing is the woke right in full meltdown mode. Farage and his ilk love to sneer at the “woke left,” but they’re just as obsessed with playing the victim. They’ve built their entire brand on cultural grievances, spinning every political disagreement into an existential battle for the soul of the nation. But now, the alt-right-adjacent fringe aka the Robinson crowd has turned on Farage, accusing him of being too woke. The irony is delicious. The former England footballer, Joey Barton – who has recently appeared in court for kicking his wife in the head in a drunken row, described Nigel on X as “Diet UKIP”. Before going onto claim the country needs a “true patriot”, not somebody who is feathering their own nest.
But let’s not kid ourselves: Farage doesn’t oppose Robinson out of principle. This is a man who spent years cosying up to Trump, railing against migrants, and stoking the flames of division. No, Nigel’s rejection of Robinson is all about optics. He knows that letting the far-right and alt-right adjacent into Reform UK would make the party unelectable. But in trying to keep one foot in the mainstream and the other in the gutter, Farage has ended up flat on his face. Newbies Tim Montgomerie and Dame Andrea Jenkyns clashed over the idea of remainer, net zero loving, Rishi backing Miriam Cates after her criticism of Reform lacking a coherent political philosophy shared by all its key players. All this makes Reform seem like a party torn between hugging the planet and hugging a pitchfork.
